Gutters are one of those “out of sight, out of mind” systems — until they overflow. The problem is that overflow isn’t just messy. It can contribute to fascia rot, staining, landscape washout, basement moisture issues, and ice problems in winter.
The simple schedule (most homes)
- Twice per year — once in late spring and once in late fall
- If you have lots of trees (especially oaks/pines): 3–4 times per year
- If you have gutter guards: still inspect/clean as needed — guards reduce debris but don’t eliminate it
Best times in the Hudson Valley
| Season | Why it matters | What you prevent |
|---|---|---|
| Late Spring | Clears seed pods, pollen buildup, roof grit, and early leaf drop. | Summer overflow during heavy rain and storm season. |
| Late Fall | Removes the bulk of leaf debris before freezing temps. | Ice issues and water backup in winter. |
| Mid-Season (optional) | Helpful for heavy tree coverage or frequent clogging. | Recurring overflow and fascia staining. |
Warning signs your gutters are overdue
- Water spilling over edges during rain
- Plants growing from the gutter line
- Dark streaks or staining on fascia or siding near gutters
- Puddles or washout patterns along the foundation
- Downspouts that don’t discharge strongly during rain
What “good gutter cleaning” actually includes
Homeowners often assume gutter cleaning means “scoop it out.” The best approach is more thorough:
- Debris removal along all channels
- Downspout checks for obvious flow restrictions
- Flush where applicable to confirm flow and clear remaining silt
- Cleanup so debris doesn’t end up in your landscaping
Do gutter guards eliminate the need?
Not completely. Guards help reduce large debris, but fine material still accumulates over time, and some guards can trap debris on top. Even with guards, you should plan periodic inspection and cleaning.
How to plan it (easy homeowner plan)
- Spring: Gutter clean + optional exterior window clean
- Summer: House wash / exterior cleaning (best curb appeal window)
- Fall: Gutter clean + optional gutter brightening as applicable
What DSG recommends
For most homes in our service area, the right baseline is a spring + fall schedule. If you have heavy tree coverage or recurring overflow, we recommend adding a mid-season service.
